Magnum Photos Workshop

Magnum Photos, one of the most prestigious photographic agency in the world, is a cooperative organization fully owned and directed by its members, representing only 60 photographers worldwide.

The intimate five day shooting workshop gives participants an opportunity to learn from one of six Magnum Photographers: Bruno Barbey, Chien-Chi Chang, Bruce Gilden, David Alan Harvey, Eli Reed, and Larry Towell. The program focuses on story formation, visual literacy, and personal vision, in addition to informal cross-pollination of ideas and discussion with all participants.

Recipients of the 2011 Scotiabank Scholarship

Kiana Hayeri
Kiana was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1988. Later she moved to Canada pursuing her post-secondary education in 2005 where she discovered the art of image making as a way to bridge the language barrier. With fine arts background, Kiana developed her personal style and approach to image-making practice while used the camera’s ability to tell a story and make a social comment. Her works embrace a distinctive theme which illustrates her cultural background. She graduated with a BFA in Photography from Ryerson University, 2011.

Yalda Pashai
Yalda was born in Tabriz, Iran. She moved to Canada in 2001 for further education. She has been naturally innovative and processes a constant desire for knowledge and understanding and the creative arts and photojournalism is the perfect career path for Yalda. Always seeking a challenge, she seems unfazed by any subject be it controversial or not.  Yalda has completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts, specializing in Photography Studies at Ryerson University in April 2011.

Shirin Fathi
Fathi is a photo-based artist born in Tehran, Iran. In 2005 she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Business from York University. It was during her time working as a documentation specialist for the Bank of Montreal that she realized that she should change course and attend art school. Four years later she graduated from OCAD University with a BDES degree in Advertising and Photography. In her photo-work she is simultaneously both subject and photographer. Instead of staying behind the lens she moves in front of the camera and creates relationships between colors, patterns, textures, space and her own body. Shirin now lives and works in Toronto.

Recipients of the 2010 Scotiabank Scholarship

Dianne Davis
Central to Davis' work is the use of photography to explore and mirror states of mind. In her images, she attempts to capture our disconnection, from one another and from our environment, and the resulting retreat into detached individual worlds. Dianne was born and raised in Chippawa, Ontario. She has exhibited her work in a solo photography show 'Sleepwalking' (Landymore Keith Contemporary Art - 2008), and in 'Adrift', a collaborative photo/sculpture show, with Karen Chapelle (64 Steps Contemporary Art - 2006), as well as in numerous group shows.

Angelika Joachimowicz
Joachimowicz was born in Zakopane, Poland, and raised in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. She is currently studying to complete a double major in Photography and Cultural Studies at Concordia University in Montréal, Québec. Her photographic work focuses on identity, gender, and intimacy.

Christopher Manson
Manson is currently studying documentary media with Don Snyder (former student of Walker Evans) in the graduate program at Ryerson University. He originally worked as a full-time editorial photographer in the UK, and in the United Arab Emirates where he was responsible for the visual content of over a dozen monthly and weekly publications. In 2009, Christopher was awarded a Ryerson Graduate Award based on his 2005 photo essay of Beirut.

Ryan Walker
Walker has a strong interest in the use of various mediums for social change and a common good. He has volunteered his time with a number of not-for-profits in Southern Ontario. In particular his photographic work at St. Joseph’s Health Centre Guelph provided vital imagery for a major fundraising campaign. Propelled by a curiosity to discover what lies beneath the surface of everyday rituals, his work attempts an intimacy within both the public sphere and domestic realm. Walker’s most recent project ‘Elisabeth’, documents his grandmother’s life after being diagnosed with cancer. This body of work celebrates important moments in healing, while examining a life that has long passed. He is currently enrolled at Ryerson University in the Photography Studies Certificate program.

Annie Zielinski
Zielinski was born in Montreal in 1982 where she continues to live and work. Annie is currently completing her Photography Degree at the University of Concordia. Her work has been displayed at many exhibitions and in addition to her personal photography work, she is experimenting with different projects cooperatively, within the César Zielinski duo. This has enabled her to create multi-disciplinary pieces. Her work can also be found amongst private collections.
